Quantitative Methods of Empirical Research

3 ECTS (2019W, 2020W, 2021W)

Undergraduate course at the Management Center Innsbruck, Department of Business & Management

This course teaches students to develop their critical ability to independently undertake and solve business problems using quantitative research methods.

In this course, students are expected to develop their critical ability to independently undertake and solve business problems using scientific methods. We start by reviewing different research methods and outlining the quantitative research process. Following a hands-on approach, we guide students, step-by-step, through carrying out a small empirical research project in which they directly apply their new knowledge. Specifically, they learn how to develop, design, and implement a questionnaire for a predefined topic. Based on the collected data, they learn how to properly analyze it and how to present the research process as well as its results in form of a scientific paper. The theoretical insights are structured in the following ten steps:

Step 1: Theory, problem definition, research question

Step 2: Hypotheses

Step 3: Research design

Step 4: Measurement of concepts; operationalisation and item developement

Step 5: Research site(s) and data sampling

Step 6: Research instruments and pretesting

Step 7: Process data

Step 8: Analyse data

Step 9: Findings and Conclusions

Step 10: Write up findings
